This is a lot of six (6) early 1950s African-American major league ballplayers who, for the most part, started in the old-time Negro leagues. Some of these cards are hard to find.
PLEASE READ: For those of you who have read the text of some of my other auctions, you will know that I am as honest as I can be about condition etc. within the bounds of my limited knowledge and eye. I’m not a power seller or a card dealer. I merely saved my cards in boxes and put them away. No one collected things 45+ years ago like they do today. These were stored in a shoe box not hermetically sealed like graded cards, although they are just the way I remember them and do have the little imperfections that come from light use. If you are going to bid on these cards, please know the following.
1) I do not take returns or provide refunds 2) Read the auction text carefully. I’ve found that by describing the item in detail, buyers have been able to get a good account of the condition and are happy with what they get. 3) View the photos, they are not scans and admittedly not always great, but will give you an idea of what you’re getting. 4) Don’t forget, I’m a novice, I’m selling my stuff from when I was a kid, I’m not in the card business. What I think is excellent or great might be different to you guys who live and die by this 5) Don’t bid wildly! Generally, these were not handled much, but are not perfect. If you’re not sure send me a message. I’ll answer you. 6) Again, there are no refunds or returns, you win the bid and the cards are yours. No crying!
I’ll note any imperfections I can see.
Larry Doby - The card has square corners with edge tips that all have a slight upturn. The card face is clean although there is a light crease or fold at the right top corner. Back is clean. Card is generally in nice condition.
Don Newcombe - The card is one of the best I have. It has edge tips with the very lightest of an upturn. The face is clean and has no marks. Back is clean. Very nice card.
Minnie Minoso - Corners all have the typical edge upturns. Card face has two very light marks and a crease starting mid-card left side to cheek. Back is clean.
Bill Bruton - Corners all have the typical edge upturns. Clean face with no mars. Back is clean. Card is generally in nice clean condition.
Sam Jethroe - Corner edge tip wear. Face clean, although there is a flaw which is a large size scotch tape mark on upper card (see photo) and a light crease. Jethroe was a well known Negro League star.
Gene Baker - Card has some light edge upturns. Face has a major flaw which is two deep parallel folds mid to lower card which are serious.
